More than 90 housing developments have already been given a new appearance by Petra Breuer, a freelance designer specialized in colour concepts and the design of facades. Residential developments, which were increasingly build during the 20^thcentury and form the cityscape of many urban areas in Europe, successfully meet the demand for affordable living spaces, but are perceived rather controversial regarding their appearance.

Breuer’s conceptual designs, which lean towards the disposition and history of the specific site, give the quarters a positive new atmosphere and increase the residents’ identification with their housings. In doing so, colour is her central design element. Larger than life typography, silhouettes and monochromic illustrations are repetitive motifs on the mostly plain coloured facades.

The design of the project “Ringelnatz-Quartier“ in Dortmund, which includes 26 buildings, was based on a thematic concept: “Joachim Ringelnatz and his merry, ironic poems and quotations. Depending on the given area of the facade or the respective line of sight, either a short line or an excerpt from a poem can be read. The typographic elements are thereby all complemented by an illustration.”

The entire project was realized by painting the designs onto the facade – using the WallMask ASLAN S 41. The highly flexible stencil film ensures sharp contours and can be easily applied onto rough facades. It ideally fits into seams and deepenings and thus prevents paint from running underneath the film.
